Book Description:
Welcome to Whiskey Creek— Heart of the Gold Country! One day, Callie Vanetta receives devastating news…

She needs a liver transplant. But her doctors warn that, in her case, the chances of finding a compatible donor aren't good.

Determined to spend whatever time she has left on her own terms, she keeps the diagnosis to herself and moves out to her late grandparents' farm. She's always wanted to live there. But the farm hasn't been worked in years and she begins to fear she can't manage it, that she'll have to return to town.

One night, a stranger comes knocking at her door…

He's an attractive and mysterious drifter by the name of Levi McCloud, and he offers to trade work for a few nights' shelter. Callie figures she doesn't have anything to lose. He needs a place to stay until he can fix his motorcycle; she needs an extra pair of hands. The arrangement seems ideal until what was supposed to be temporary starts to look more and more permanent. Then she realizes she does have something to lose—her heart. And, although he doesn't yet know it, Levi stands to lose even more.

Sherri’s Review:
Emotionally charged, When Summer Comes will have you weeping by the end of the story. It was such an emotional story; it had me glued to it and I couldn’t put it down.  I simply had to finish it in one seating and was up to the wee hours of the morning doing so.

Callie is keeping a whooper of a secret. She has been diagnosed with a fatal liver disease and has not told her family or friends. She is living her last days on her grandparents farm trying to keep up a normal life. One night a strange man comes to her door, begging for her to help him and changes the direction of those last months on the farm.

Levi is the strange man that comes knocking and has some secrets of his own. He was once in the military; but has become a drifter without any direction in his life. He is just trying to fly under the radar.  When he is attacked by a pack of dogs, he goes to the closest house looking for help without involving the authorities and finds Callie. They strike a bargain; he can stay in the barn while healing and fixing up fix up his bike, but also has to help out repairing the old farm.  During that time, Levi ends up falling for Callie. Unfortunately Callie doesn’t have much of that left.

What I enjoyed about this story was the subtle romance between Callie and Levi and how each dealt with their issues. Callie has to come to terms with her future, while Levi has to come to a resolution about his past. Together they make a present which is just heart wrenching and delightful to read. Both are strong, secure and emotionally rich, albeit sometimes a bit too pig headed to lean on another person.

Another bonus is the cast of Callie’s friends in the book. Since I am new to this series, I’m guessing the other books in the series will deal with these other residents of Whiskey Creek.  This is my first Brenda Novak book and I now have another favorite author to add to my reading list!
