Book Description:

Welcome to Vegas. Home of the Sin City Collectors. The job description is easy: Bring the offending supernatural in to the Boss and don’t ask any questions.

Nevada Hamilton has learned a few things since becoming a Sin City Collector, and staying away from vampires is one of them. After botching her first Collection, the vamp getting away after causing as much damage as possible, she hasn’t been assigned to another one since.

But when she receives her next playing card, she’s in for a surprise. Not only is a vampire her next target, but they’ve paired her up to make sure she gets the job done right. Refusing a Collection is not an option, but when she discovers who she’s working with, making the mission as difficult as possible for her new partner becomes her top priority…

Being a hellhound isn’t enough to protect Jake Troubadour from Nevada Hamilton, no matter how thick his skin is. Finding out he has to work with the beautiful dhampir, after not seeing her for three years, is a low blow—but Jake is a professional. He takes his Collections as seriously as he does running his bar. He’ll do whatever it takes to get the job done, but after that, he’s out. No more chances for the girl who wrecked his bike and scarred his soul so long ago. But even with his heart dead set against it, this hellhound quickly finds he’s not immune to love after all.

What’s Collected in Vegas, stays in Vegas...

My Thoughts:

Just in time for the summer reading season comes ACES WILD, a Sin City Collectors Novella.  It has everything that I need for that perfect poolside read:

  • Fiesty kickass heroine (Nevada) –
  • Tall, dark and hellhound hunky hero (Jake) –
  • Paranormal characters and storyline (Dhampires and Hellhound, hello!!!!) –
  • Awesome setting (did I mention Las Vegas?) –

The Sin City Collectors series consists of a supernatural community within Las Vegas as we know it.  Numerous types of paranormal beings are introduced including vampires, dhampirs, nymphs, witches, and hellhounds.  The Collectors are charged with keeping the supernatural community in-line through their mysterious boss, and weekly assignments.  The overall premise reminded me of Charlie’s Angels; but with supernaturals.

ACES WILD  kicks off quickly and the pacing is tight throughout the novella. I tend to feel that novellas have a hard time getting the characters background and world development correct; however, ACES WILD did not leave me with that reaction. Nevada and Jake’s background had something to do with that along with the Las Vegas setting, both were recognizable and I could easily relate to the circumstances and world.

Nevada and Jake had a one-night stand three years ago and both wish to forget that event, but for very different reasons.   You just know their attraction is going to happen, but I loved that Ms. Carlson took the time to delve into Nevada’s character and develop facets to her that explained her attitude and barriers she put up. Without that development, I’m not sure I would have liked Nevada as much, since she would have come off just an angry female character to me.

Jake was a much more lovable character to me.  First, he is a hellhound and I think that just rocks the paranormal world.  Jake is my first hellhound (OK, that is not exactly how it sounds), but he is the first hellhound character that I have read about and I enjoyed the character’s originality.  Initially,  I thought he needed to walk away from Nevada but once I learned more about Nevada I changed my mind about these two being together.

There is a surprising amount of action packed into the 115 pages and the story does wrap up rather quickly.  I’m not going to say much about the ending since I hate spoilers and I can’t say much without spoiling it for another reader. Needless to say, Nevada and Jake handle the situation and the future looks bright for the two of them.  ACES WILD is a great start to this new and unique novella series and I look forward to reading the next installment,  QUEEN OF HEARTS by Kristin Painter, along with hoping to see some appearance by Jake and Nevada.
