Book Description:

Lauren Layne’s latest novel about the healing power of redemption tells the story of a crush gone wickedly wrong, proving that what you want isn’t always what you need.

Growing up in New York, Michael St. Claire never expected to spend his twenties wearing cowboy boots. But that was before he learned about his real father, a total stranger with a family in Cedar Grove, Texas. Once in the Lone Star State, Michael meets Kristin Bellamy, who is exquisitely refined and everything Michael always thought he wanted in a woman. The only problem is that Kristin is dating Michael’s new half brother, Devon.

Kristin’s mouthy, curvy sister Chloe has always been in love with Devon Patterson. So when Michael offers to help Chloe break up Devon and Kristin, Chloe agrees to a deal that seems too good to be true. Before long, Chloe finally gets her man, only to make a startling discovery: She no longer wants the guy she had to fight for—she wants the one who stood by her side.

After all he and Chloe have been through, Michael swears he’s damaged goods. Can Chloe convince him that love is worth the risk?

Great Quote:
So this is why people have meaningless, no-strings-attached sex. Because guy-to-girl contact feels good.

My Thoughts:

I am at that point where I’ll read almost anything Lauren Layne writes. I’ve read & reviewed her books in the past and continuously seek out more. I hadn’t heard of this series so when I saw it on Netgalley, I had to try it out.  Then I realized that it was the second book in the series, so I then had to purchase book one (worth it) and read that before this one.  Now, you don’t NEED to do that, you could read them out of order, but I recommend reading them all — if only because she’s a fantastic author.

But I digress: in Crushed I’ve found a kindred spirit in Chloe.  Curvy girl with low self esteem but the sarcasm and snark to hide it. And Michael sees past that all… yes, he does initially attempt to use her as an ends to a means, but also genuinely wants to help her with her body and self esteem. He finds in her a magnificent friend who sneaks past all the walls he’s put up.

I will admit, at first, that I was a bit annoyed with him for wanting her to change her body — as was she, but he makes it very clear that he wants her to have a healthier lifestyle and mental health — rather than turning her into a twig. I kind of wish I had the money to have a trainer like him because it would be so very helpful. I have no self control. But maybe I’ll use her as inspiration!

Lauren Layne created another world of fascinating characters, humor, grace (and falls from), and another moment in which a character says, “That’s what she said.”  Oh the joy in my heart upon reading those words!!

Grab this book when it comes out on Valentine’s Day  April 14th! Grab the others if you haven’t already (She has a Redemption book 0.5 as well that I need to buy).

** Update: I read the publishing date incorrectly, I apologize! **

Book Description:
"You have to go. I won't be able to control myself. I've wanted you so bad for so long and after I've been in the cage...I can't think straight." He gives a guttural groan and his fist clenches on my hip.

Primitive. Primal. His need speaks to me. I tighten my grip on his neck and rock up to kiss him. He takes over. His kiss is hard and demanding.

"Mine." His voice is raw, savage and for a moment I truly believe he may lose control.

He rules in the ring

Two years ago, Jake and Amanda were going hot and heavy. But when Jake wanted more, Amanda walked away. Jake immersed himself in mixed martial arts, living life on the edge. But that didn't dull the pain of Amanda's rejection-until a chance encounter throws them together.

A high-powered lawyer, Amanda was a no-strings-attached kind of girl. But two years after her breakup with Jake, she still hasn't found anyone who gets her heart pumping the way he did. And then he shows up in her boardroom, hot as sin and needing help...

But can he rule her heart?

Jake is darker, sexier, and impossible to resist. As their chemistry builds, Amanda's not sure if she can stay in control, or if she's finally willing to let him claim her body and soul.

Fun Quote:

Bad body. Don’t think about sex. Fires. Insurance companies. Wills. Documents.

But how can I not think about sex when Rampage is throwing words around like dominant, submission, mount and pound? What it would be like to have Jake show me the moves, his body mounting me, his voice driving me to submission. My cheeks flush and I turn my head so Drake doesn’t see. Rampage is demonstrating a rear naked choke to one of the classmates. What I wouldn’t give for a rear naked.

Ginny’s Review:
So when the chance came to read the second book in this series, I pretty much latched on at the first moment.  I reviewed “Against the Ropes“, the first book in the Redemption series last year (you can read that review here ) and loved it. This book is no let down from there — Ms Castille still writes with wit, eroticism and enough bite that you ache for the characters, and want to hug them and punch them at the same time — it’s real. And for me, someone not all that into MMA fighting, it still draws me in every time and I find myself looking for more and more romance books dealing with this.

I’m not going to sum up the book because the description already does a very good job of it, but I will say that this had me laughing out loud, moaning along with Amanda and wishing I could meet all the guys of Redemption — read the books and you’ll understand why I say this.  The story line belongs to Amanda and Jake, but all the supporting characters make it that much more rich and wonderful to read.  The guys are ones I’d love to have at my back.

I’m REALLY hoping I get to read more at some point, and I’m hoping I get to read the taming of Doctor Drake.

Get the book when it comes out on July 1st. Buy the book. Read the book. Love the book.
