#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR SUSAN WIGGS INVITES YOU TO AN UNFORGETTABLE CHRISTMAS IN THE CATSKILLS
A single father who yearns to be a family man, Logan O'Donnell is determined to create the perfect Christmas for his son, Charlie. The entire O'Donnell clan arrives to spend the holidays in Avalon, a postcard-pretty town on the shores of Willow Lake, a place for the family to reconnect and rediscover the special gifts of the season.
One of the guests is a newcomer to Willow Lake— Darcy Fitzgerald. Sharp-witted, independent and intent on guarding her heart, she's the last person Logan can see himself falling for. And Darcy is convinced that a relationship is the last thing she needs this Christmas.
Yet between the snowy silence of the winter woods, and toasty moments by a crackling fire, their two lonely hearts collide. The magic of the season brings them each a gift neither ever expected—a love to last a lifetime.
We’re introduced to Darcy Fitzgerald and Logan O’Donnell. Darcy is recently divorced and is dreading spending the holidays with her family, her ex, and her ex’s family. Logan is a single father who’s dealing with having to share his son Collin with his ex-wife and her husband. Our hero and heroine are both craving a little change in their lives. Darcy longs for a husband and kids and Logan wants to marry again and build a family of his own. When Logan and Darcy start running into each other, their interests are peaked. But Darcy is afraid to get involved with someone with a kid. It’s up to Logan to convince her to take a chance on love.
It was refreshing to have two down to earth and relatable characters in Darcy and Logan. Darcy is smart, confident, independent, and she loves her family. She’s also nursing a broken heart and is understandably gun-shy about diving headfirst into a serious relationship with Logan. Logan is a single father, with a successful business, a big heart, and a nosy family. For Logan, Collin is the most important person in his life, but he’s ready to share his life with someone again.
They both have reasons for being cautious about starting anything serious between them. We see why Darcy is hesitant to start anything with Logan. We’re given constant examples and reminders of why she’s afraid to fall for someone new, and it all stems from her ex and step children. She even skips out on her family’s holiday vacations to avoid her ex and his children, because it’s too painful for her to be in their presence.
We understand why Logan is a little more accepting of his feelings for Darcy. We see how much he misses his son when Collin leaves. We’re given insight into how lonely he is; how much he wants to start a family of his own. So it makes sense why he pursues Darcy once he realizes they could have something special together. Nothing about their actions or reactions to each other and their situation felt convoluted or contrived. And that’s a testament to the author who does a great job of creating organic characters and situations.
Overall, Candlelight Christmas by Susan Wiggs is a light-hearted Holiday romance set against an atmospheric and wintry backdrop, with relatable characters, and a heartwarming romance. This is the perfect book to curl up with just in time for the Holidays. (Reviewed by Quiana – The Book Lover)
