Ginny’s Review:

For a young adult short novel, this book was intense in a great way!

First off, I’d like to make a few clarifications because, once again, I feel the book blurb is misleading. Yes, she is kidnapped on the beach on the night of her seventeenth birthday — but it wasn’t necessarily a quiet walk. She was crying and hurt.  Sofia’s character has the unusual ability to be in tune with all of her senses, fully, at all times. So for her to not notice the “creature” on the beach (yep, it’s a vampire), she was pretty distracted.

Secondly, Derek isn’t addicted to power. If anything, he wants less of it.

Derek has just woken from a long sleep, after fulfilling part of a prophecy from centuries before. And when Sofia is captured and brought to him, after she had been terrorized by his older brother, he is instantly drawn to her by one small act of humanity towards one of the other girls brought to be in his harem.

And just as he’s about to attack her, she calls him out and stops him.

Almost immediately they become partners, in a way, even though on the island, The Blood Shade, humans are slaves.

I can’t say much more without spoiling something or another, but I really loved this book, and I asked for more time so I could read it again. It’s a quick read, and a great one! I really hope Ms Forrest publishes the next book in the series soon, because where it left off is just GAH! No!

4.5 out of 5 from this reviewer, who is currently salivating for more.
