Book Description:
Caught between desire and loyalty…

Derek DiMarzio would do anything for the members of his disgraced Special Forces team—sacrifice his body, help a former teammate with a covert operation to restore their honor, and even go behind enemy lines. He just never expected to want the beautiful woman he found there.

When a sexy stranger asks questions about her brother, Emilie Garza is torn between loyalty to the brother she once idolized and fear of the war-changed man he's become. Derek’s easy smile and quiet strength tempt Emilie to open up, igniting the desire between them and leading Derek to crave a woman he shouldn’t trust.

As the team’s investigation reveals how powerful their enemies are, Derek and Emilie must prove where their loyalties lie before hearts are broken and lives are lost. Because love is too hard to come by to let slip away…

Reviewed by Lynn:

Derek “Marz” DiMarzio is a man who doesn’t let his limitations stop him. Emilie Garza needs some computer help when she finds it’s sitting right next to her. This is one more of the Hard Ink series that was hard to put down. It’s a great addition to a great series.

This is one of those stories that shows how soldiers come home different from when they left. They can return both physically and mentally changed. But one thing that doesn’t change is that they still need our love, support, and even our strength. And sometimes we have to be strong because we just don’t have the credentials to give them the help they need and that’s where our love comes in – we can help find them the person/people who can help them. “It takes a village” comes to mind.

I think you would be all right in reading this as a stand-alone but if you want to understand this group, and the women that love them, I would read this series in order. But you’re lucky because this is only the third book in the series so you don’t have that many to read in order to catch up. And if you stop over to Laura’s web site, http://laurakayeauthor.com/extras/, you can find out which of Hard Ink guys would be your perfect boyfriend.

Our author is great in adding in some life lessons. The reader doesn’t really know that this is what she’s doing because they’re just enjoying the experience of getting to know some military men who’ve had some rough times. Marz is a man who is willing to stand by his convictions – he stands behind his beliefs no matter what. What I love about the suspense and mystery is that I can never figure anything out. This is what has me reading right until the very end. I think if I could figure out things too early then I would lose interest. The author does include sex but it’s not all about getting hot and sweaty. It’s to show how much the characters care about each other. Words can be graphic but nothing that I would consider to be disgusting. And when you get to the end, please make sure to read the Acknowledgements – you will get the author’s take on writing this story.

Book Description:

Semblance  (Book 1 of the Midnight Society):
Whoever said money couldn't buy happiness has never starved a day in their lives.

My name is Aria Valencia, a third year classical music student at the University, and I was down to my last dollar. Some nights, I seriously considered stripping at the Skin Bar just to make ends meet, but the thought of my dad's spirit--God rest his soul--scowling at me while I shoved my breasts into some pervert's face was enough to turn me off the idea completely.

And then one night, chance came knocking on my door under the guise of the Midnight Society, a secret cabal comprised of the most wealthy and influential souls this side of the Universe. Their leader was a man named Shadow, who was equally enigmatic as he was gorgeous and, for some mystifying reason, had his dark brooding eyes focused on me.

Seduced by the promises of fame and fortune in exchange for a seemingly innocent request, I soon found myself drawn into a provocative world filled with both vast riches and unending lies and it didn't take long for me to realize what being a part of the Midnight Society actually entailed: shiny things, hot sex, and dead bodies.

There's a dark side to every love story, and this one was mine.

Penumbra  (Book 2 of The Midnight Society):
In one night, I lost everything: my hopes and dreams, my best friend, and Shadow’s heart. He told me he loved me, but it was just a lie.

The Midnight Society has fallen, reduced to ashes by a monster--a person whom we all once trusted. The betrayal has shattered our lives forever and Shadow, Lord of the Midnight Society, finds himself at a crossroad.

One road leads him further down the path of vengeance, filled with unending violence and dead bodies. The other road leads to me. However, our path to happiness is paved with broken glass and razorblades, and at some point, one of us is going to fall.

Welcome to the world of the Midnight Society.

Ginny’s Review:
So, in doing two books in one review, I realize that just by reading the book descriptions alone, there will be spoilers. But I will try to keep them at a minimum.

I decided to review both at once because this is a series I believe in and that I want to know immediately what happens next!

The description gives you just a vague overview of what happens in the books and I’m grateful for that. It doesn’t prepare you for just how deep and dark this rabbit hole goes, and THAT is what makes me love this author.

Aria begins in a world that seems weird but mostly innocent and then things take such a drastic turn… actually, “drastic” seems too tame of a word here… I don’t know how many different ways I can describe it, and still have it not cover just how quickly it went from light to dark in her world.

Shadow is a strange, one-track minded kind of guy and is determined to find the one behind killing his parents, and when he finds out… his steely determination reaches farther than you can imagine.

These books give you one hell of a ride, though it seems to start off slow and sweet and romantic… I suppose that’s why I loved the shock it gave me. Because, unless you’re warned, you don’t expect it. The beginning wasn’t bringing me back again and again, but I was told to stick with it, and I’m SO glad that I did. The juxtaposition between the beginning of the books (not all sweet, but still, mostly innocent) and where book one, alone, ended up? Brilliant.

Logan Patricks is an an incredible author and I can’t wait to read his next one — or even just know the title. “Semblance” is defined as an outward aspect or appearance. “Penumbra” is a shadowy, indefinite, or marginal area. I had to look that last one up, and if you’ve read my reviews before, you’ll know that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it when I have to look up a new word that I don’t know. It’s the mind expanding.

The first book is available (currently) for $3.83 – normally $3.99. It’s worth it. Read the first book and then buy and read the second. You’ll thank me later!

P.S. – Logan Patricks gets brownie points for having his characters listening to Regina Spektor in the books. Respect and points for a good taste in music!
