Chloe considered telling her sister that there was such a thing as knowing too much, but she bit back the rejoinder and kept silent instead, unwilling to take their conversation in that particular direction.

“In all likelihood you’ll be right and my interest in whoever he is will prove pointless.” Fiona said as they passed a row of elm trees. Like a curtain pushed aside, they gave way to an impressive view of Thorncliff, the towering walls dwarfing anyone standing before them and likening them to ants. “Come to think of it, he did seem rather dull—as if it made no difference to him that he was about to arrive at the most fantastic estate in England. He should have been staring out of the window of that carriage with keen enthusiasm. Most young gentlemen would do so, but he did not.”

“No,” Chloe agreed as they turned onto the driveway that would take them straight up to the front door. “Perhaps coming here disagrees with him.”

“I can’t imagine why,” Fiona said. “It’s the most fascinating place in the world!”

“You say so only because you have not traveled the world.”

“Perhaps that’s our answer,” Fiona suggested. “Perhaps the man we saw, whoever he may be, has traveled to so many fine places that Thorncliff fails to entice.”

“Or maybe he’s just not the adventurous sort,” Chloe offered. “He may simply enjoy reading a good book, in which case he has no need of coming here at all and probably considers Thorncliff a complete waste of time.”

The words brought Fiona to an immediate halt. “Do you find it a complete waste of time, Chloe?”

A rush of emotion swept through Chloe. It almost felt as if an ebbing tide was tugging at her belly. “Of course not. Why on earth would you think such a thing when I’ve already told you how happy I am to be spending more time with you and the rest of the family?”

A puff of air escaped Fiona in the form of a sigh. “Perhaps you wanted to be kind and spare my feelings?”

Taking her sister by the hand, Chloe held on fast as she gazed into her troubled young eyes. “No. I would never be dishonest with you.”

“Are you certain? Because I am well aware of your fondness for reading as well as your lack of enthusiasm for socializing at the moment. Are you sure you wouldn’t have rather stayed at home with your books?”

Closing her eyes, Chloe struggled to ease the nerves that threatened to send her heart racing. “No. I would not. The Thorncliff library is vast. I mean to explore it during my stay here. As for socializing . . . I’ve just spent a year in mourning, Fiona. I need time to readjust.”

“I’m sorry,” Fiona said, biting her lip. “I just wish that I could do more to make you happy.”

“I am happy,” Chloe assured her. At the very least, she was free now, and that was pretty much the same thing. “Come, let’s find out who Lord Hainsworth’s companion is so we can put your curiosity to rest.”

Writing The Danger In Tempting An Earl

This book presented a number of challenges, partly because it’s the final book in the series where all the loose ends tie together and partly because the hero and heroine are both dealing with some serious issues. Katherine’s pain was particularly difficult. I wanted her to be weak in the beginning due to everything she’s been through – a woman who has lost all sense of self-worth and confidence due to an abusive marriage. For her to risk her heart again, to trust another man not to hurt her even when she realizes deep down inside that Lucien wouldn’t do so, isn’t easy for her. There is an element of deep longing within her however – the desire to be cherished – which urges her forward, even as she fears taking the necessary risk to achieve it. To write this gradual growth of character, starting with an oppressed woman and having her regain the confidence she once lost with the help of a man who loves her, was emotionally exhausting at many times. And then of course there’s Lucien’s heartache over losing his brother and, more recently, his father whom he never managed to reconcile with. Simultaneously, there was the mystery about the Kingsborough Ball shooter to solve. I already knew who it was going to be before starting to write this book, but making it work wasn’t as simple as I’d imagined – especially since I wanted to move the characters away from the countryside setting where the Kingsborough Ball takes place and back to London without Katherine’s daughter tagging along. Fortunately Katherine’s parents were happy to help out with that particular problem =) And then there was Lord Starkly whom I thought should play a more prominent role. Hopefully he’ll prove something of a surprise after his brief appearances in the previous books. Mr. Goodard is also woven into the plot (many of you will be happy to know). He gives a helping hand in bringing Katherine and Lucien closer together and also reveals his own love interest. So, with cameo performances from many of the characters you’ve met in the previous books, I hope The Danger In Tempting An Earl will prove a satisfying conclusion to the At The Kingsborough Ball series.

Excerpt #6

Reaching the other side of the ballroom, she was just about to turn down the hallway that would take her to the ladies retiring room when she spotted Lucien, his head bowed toward Lady Julie as he spoke to her. There was an intimacy between them that irritated Katherine beyond reason, and in spite of herself, she felt her whole body grow stiff as she watched the pair. Fearing they might see her, she made up her mind to continue on her way when a low voice stopped her. “They make a fine match, don’t you think?”

Vexed by the question, Katherine spun around to find Mr. Goodard, the Duke of Kingsborough’s friend, standing close to her, his deep blue eyes trained on the same couple she’d been watching moments earlier. While she had met Mr. Goodard once or twice before, she had never spoken overly much with the man and it annoyed her now that he’d noticed where her attention had just been riveted. “I’m sure they do,” she said, her words a little terser than she would have liked.

“I must confess that I’m a little surprised by Roxberry’s eagerness – I wouldn’t have thought Lady Julie his type.”

“No? And why is that? He’s been gone from here for quite some time, Mr. Goodard. Who knows what his tastes are like these days?”

Tearing his gaze away from Lucien and Lady Julie, Mr. Goodard fixed his eyes on Katherine and frowned. “You seem…piqued, my lady. Do you not approve of the choice your friend has made for himself?”

A nervous laugh escaped her. “Rest assured, sir, he has not made a choice yet. For heaven’s sake, the two of them have only just met.”

“Hmm…perhaps that is true. However, love matches sometimes take little more than a minute to be formed.”

A love match?

Why, it was preposterous to think that Lucien had been so easily struck by Cupid’s arrow. She looked toward him again just as he laughed in response to something Lady Julie said, his hand reaching out to rest for a moment on her arm. Something awful rose inside Katherine at that moment – something she did not like or understand in the least, and it took every ounce of restraint she possessed to quell it.

Release Day Spotlight, Excerpt & Giveaway: The Scandal in Kissing an Heir by Sophie Barnes

Excerpt – Chapter 1 Kingsborough Hall, Moxley, England 1817 Daniel Neville, heir to the Marquisate of Wolvington, removed himself to a corner of the Kingsborough ballroom—as good a place as any for a man who’d been labeled an outcast by Society. Overhead, candles held by three large chandeliers spread their glow across the room, the jewels worn by countless women winking in response to the light. This was true opulence, and nobody did it better than the Kingsboroughs. Why, there was even a glass slipper sculpted from ice and a pumpkin carriage sitting outside on the lawn—a touch of fairy-tale splendor indicative of the theme that the dowager duchess had selected for her masquerade. And what a masquerade. Never in his life had Daniel born witness to so many feathers. They were everywhere—attached to gowns, on the edges of masks, and sprouting from women’s hair. The ball gowns were marvelous too. These were […]

New Release Spotlight & Giveaway: The Trouble With Being a Duke by Sophie Barnes

Get to Know the Newest Addition to the Avon Family: Five Questions for Sophie Barnes Romance authors seem to have an unending love-affair with fairytales. Why do you think that is—and what drew you to this much-loved fairytale?  When it comes to romance, we all long for the hero and heroine to live happily ever after. The greater the obstacles in their way, the greater our tendency to cheer them on, and let’s face it, Cinderella did not have it easy. I think I was drawn to this particular fairy-tale partly because it’s one of my all-time favorites, but also because it centers on something we can all relate to – the wish for a once in a lifetime opportunity to make our dreams come true. Compared to other fairy-tales, it’s probably also the one that’s easiest to adapt to everyday life. We can remove the fairy godmother and her […]
