Excerpt

“Dear God,” I whispered. “This can’t be happening.”

There was a burst of white on the horizon that advanced toward the island with tremendous speed. It grew in size the closer it got, overtaking the pitch-black sky and then enveloping the summit. The cloud momentarily lingered overhead, several sets of wings thrashing in the air. The shape of a man emerged from the haze, wings attached to his back.

“What in the hell is this?” I said.

The winged man descended and hovered above the action, the wind not affecting his ability to fly. His wings were at least four times his size and flapped holding him in place. The cloud lifted and revealed twenty more winged humans.

“Angels,” I said, which attracted the attention of the bearded elder. He looked at me and gave me a partial smile. “But angels aren’t real.” And then I caught what I had just said. These were the same creatures that had appeared two nights ago when the Drakes and I attempted to protect the Lane family.

Jal looked up; his eyes narrowed to slits and his lip quivered. The three elders smiled and nodded at the army of angels. The angels swooped toward the ground and landed in the middle of the circle, their wings disappearing as soon as their feet hit the snow. They all reached over their shoulder, unsheathed a sword, and spread out over the battlefield.

Ginny’s Review:

Small Spoiler of Where We Left Off:
** Allison has taken off, run away from her fate, after killing a big, bad guy and finding out that her husband is still out there somewhere.  There’s other stuff in there, but I really don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who has yet to read the first book.

I was a little disappointed by this book — and I do mean only a little.  After reading and reviewing the previous book, The Descendant, (my review for that book found here ), and after yelling at my eReader for the abrupt ending of book one, I suppose my expectations were a bit high for this.

Do not get me wrong, this is still a very good book; however I was not as drawn into it as I was with the first.  There are moments that tend to drag out a bit too much… and overall, I think a lot of the book could have been edited down to a smaller/shorter book.

But let me discuss the things I liked! I like giving positive reviews and I do like Kelley Grealis’ style of writing — I even made a note that I love the font used for the chapters (i.e. “Chapter 1”, “Chapter 2”, etc.) — I want that font. It looks awesome.

There was a point that made me giggle because as one character is trying to escape being captured, he pulls the old “HEY LOOK OVER THERE!!” trick and runs away — and being a vampire, he can run quite quickly. I scoffed at first, thinking the others should never have fallen for it, but it was quite believable and then I just giggled. It’s an old trick in the book, simple, yet clever and effective.

I also enjoyed the new knowledge — or relearning the lore that vampires are also compelled to count grains of sand or salt.  This comes into play within the book and I remembered that members of the Fae must do this, but I hadn’t remembered that vampires (in some lore) are also compelled to do so, which is why they can’t cross a line of salt. The lore is that they cannot move until they have counted every single last grain. I LOVED that this was used. So kudos to Ms Grealis!

Let it be known that, while there are no sex scenes in this book, there are still a few heated glances that make me look forward to book three, which will be coming, though a set date has not been announced. I will continue to read this series and any other books Kelley Grealis decides to grace us with because I do enjoy her style and the storyline — as I mentioned in my previous review, I enjoy her take on vampires and how it’s different from others. I love the religious aspect and I love how she brings lesser-known myths and lore into her writing. It’s creative and new in a world of books that seem to be cookie-cutter formats.  She cuts her own path and for that I will forever respect her.

In summation, this is a great book — it didn’t quite live up to the previous one, but it still leaves me thirsting for more.  Check out this series if you enjoy new takes and lesser known lore. Honestly, I’m loving it!

Interview and Giveaway: The Descendant by Kelly Grealis

UGR: Hi Kelley and welcome to Urban Girl Reader! First of all congrats on the one year anniversary for The Descendant! Can you tell us a little bit about the book and what about the genre inspired you? Kelley: When I decided to write The Descendant, which is a vampire novel, I knew I needed a different angle than all of the other vampire books and movies that were out there. Thankfully, that angle was easy for me to come up with. One thing I had noticed with all of the vampire books I’ve read or movies I’ve watched was that the vampire was always just there. I never read a story about the origin of the vampire. So The Descendant is a tale about the origin of the vampire told through the experiences of a woman who discovers that she’s a descendant of the first vampire. I tie my […]
