Half-vampire, half-human, Nina Martinez spent most of her life underground as part of an elite secret team of government agents who quietly take down rogue monsters — the human world none the wiser.

She moves back to her hometown of Providence, RI to keep an eye on the recent uptick in supernatural activity, and to help run the bar she co-owns with her aunt. Her attempt at a “regular” life, not to mention a budding relationship with smoking hot FBI agent Max, is cut short because of a string of ritual murders targeting the city’s community of witches.

But Nina’s investigation unearths deadly secrets from her long buried parents. Now the target of supernatural assassins, could Nina be the most dangerous vampire hybrid to ever exist? No wonder she can’t get a date.

Lynn’s Review:
This book is written in the first person.

Nina Martinez and her friend Frankie are chasing some vampires in Newark, New Jersey – who knew?  Always love a good fight to start off the story.  It makes you pay attention to everything that’s going on.  And even the mayor gets involved – can’t see my mayor getting into the middle of the melee.

Nina’s “day” job is working as a bartender.  Max Devereaux is an FBI agent that ends up at her bar.  He’s a very take-charge kind of guy.  Nina’s home base is in Rhode Island.  I will have to take this book with me when I have a chance to go back and visit there.  I seemed to have missed a lot over the years.

Make sure that you read this story very carefully because there’s something I want to try the next time I’m fighting vertigo and nausea.  It sounds like something that could actually work.  One thing that made me smile was when Nina comes across slime – I apologize to our author but all I could think of was the movie “Ghostbusters”.  I wonder if Ray Parker Jr. could rework it and make it Nina’s theme song.

If you want a great way to spend your Halloween, read this book and watch the “Ghostbusters” movies.  I can’t think of a better way to spend a Thursday evening while the kids are out Trick or Treating.  The only thing that would come close would be if you could be down to Rhode Island and spend your Halloween there.

I actually am a little jealous of Nina – she got to go to the Coast Guard House.  I used to vacation down in the area quite a few years ago.  But the one thing I never got to do was eat at the Coast Guard House.  I’ll have to go and see if there’s any paranormal activity there.

For me, this book is more paranormal suspense than romance – but that’s a good thing.  I was intrigued by what was going on with Nina.  The romance, and yes that includes sex, was a nice addition but I would have enjoyed the book just as much without it.  I liked the way that Karen made Nina a take no prisoners kind of woman but at the same time show her vulnerable side.

I find it interesting that as I get closer to the ending of our story, the History Channel has a program on titled “Vampire Secrets”.  It was a great way to help me as I finished this outstanding book.  Was a little disappointed that I’m now finished this book but some good news is that I found that there is a free 5-page prequel titled Bloody Boulevard, which can be found on Smashwords (https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/305091).  This gives you a little insight into who Nina Martinez is.

The paranormal action can be found throughout the whole book.  You’re on the edge of your seat right up until the end.  You just don’t know who is going to come out on top.  Karen had me glad for how she decided to end this story – it leaves you guessing and glad that there may be another book.  Also, Nina’s love life is left up in the air.  I tried to see if I could find out anything for you but was unsuccessful.  We’ll just have to watch around the web to see if she ever posts. (Reviewed by Lynn Reynolds from Romance Reader Enthusiast)
