She has never feared the walking dead. It’s the power required to reanimate the dead that startles her, seduces her. The power that dwells inside her…and is growing.
For Professor Ruby Montagne, being a necromancer has brought her nothing but heartache, and she walked away from that part of her life long ago. However, her quiet existence in San Francisco is shattered when she stumbles upon the body of a slain witch, and the supernatural community insists she transform him into a revenant to track the killer. But his murder was just the beginning, and Ruby soon realizes that the stakes are higher than anyone can imagine—and that revenants have nasty minds of their own.
Now demonic creatures have escaped into the human world, and zombies once again walk the streets. For humanity’s sake, Ruby forms an unlikely alliance with a witch, a zombie, and Ewan March, a demon warrior who sets her senses on fire. She’s always distrusted demons and Ewan is no exception, but circumstances push them closer together, and Ruby not only finds it harder to resist him, she isn’t sure she even wants to. But she suspects his job of patrolling the portal separating humans and demons conceals a dark and deadly past that may consume them both.
With events spiraling out of control, Ruby unravels a plot that not only threatens the human and demon realms, but puts Ruby’s very soul in jeopardy. Because when the dead walk, no one is safe. Especially Ruby.
This book is told in the first person.
Ruby Montagne’s a college professor who’s more unique than any of my professors ever were. She’s very popular and people keep bothering her because of her special skills. Ewan March is her sexual fantasies come to life. And a mystery will bring them together.
Ruby is at a meeting where they’re discussing a possible serial killer – this one is a little different. It was an interesting meeting and Ruby can’t believe what is being asked of her. This looks like it’s going to be an interesting read. But once I finished, I didn’t find it as interesting as I thought I would – thought it would be a paranormal suspense with some romance added in.
I will say, there was a scene where Ruby is at a museum that had me reminiscing about my childhood. It got me remembering about one of my favorite TV shows, “The Addams Family”. Every time I watched the show it had me snapping my fingers right along with them. Then when the movie came out, I liked it but didn’t find it was as good as the show. So, having said that, make sure that you don’t miss this scene.
A disappointment I had was that I was expecting more of a paranormal romance. There was sex, yes, but I didn’t feel the romance between the two characters. Maybe there will be more romance come the second book so I’m not giving up on the series yet. Mimi did a great job with the paranormal/fantasy by adding in a mystery that needs to be solved.
Mimi also shows what happens when we begin to fool with Mother Nature. Some things are meant to be left alone – even though we may have the best intentions. This is one thing that makes this book a page turner – the reader will want to see the mystery get solved and know that everything turns out alright.
This may be a great book for the paranormal/urban fantasy enthusiast. For some, it may seem a little confusing because of all the bouncing around. But if you read slowly, then you should be fine. The ending will set you up for reading the next book titled The Necromancer’s Betrayal that will be coming out in 2014. (Reviewed by Lynn Reynolds from Romance Reader Enthusiast)
