Centuries ago, Meryn was thought to be utterly lost--all traces of his soul given up to the ravening goblin horde. But with the curse that enslaved him now broken, he must once again learn to walk in the realm of men.
Nurse Nadine Gilbert likes working the night shift to avoid her disturbing dreams, but her mysterious new patient looks hauntingly familiar. Meryn knows he doesn't deserve a second chance, but Nadine brings out his long-buried human side. Telling her the truth about his violent past could destroy their fragile trust. Could she ever believe in the love of a Goblin Warrior?
Nadine Gilbert works in the emergency room at the local hospital. I would have loved to be in the waiting room watching as Nadine first interacts with Meryn. They don’t understand each other because of a language barrier. But it also doesn’t stop them from becoming friends and more.
I found it interesting that Meryn speaks a language that used to be taught when I was in high school. The year that I was supposed to take the class they decided that it was no longer required – can we say that was a close call? Shona shows her readers how having a language barrier can make people vulnerable. This is something that people tend not to think about when they come in contact with a person that doesn’t speak English.
Shona shows her readers what it is that goblins crave. It also shows to what lengths a person will go to in order to get what they want. Sometimes we don’t quite understand why some people steal but she gives us some insight into what drives a person to do what they do. Plus, we have to remember that we don’t always know a person’s background and what would force them to go to such extremes.
Shona also reminds us that if you believe in something strongly enough you can overcome just about anything. What I love about her is that she builds the relationships with her characters. Nothing is rushed and you don’t realize how quickly the pages go by. We also get some life lessons that we sometimes forget about but she hides it in the form of a great story. If you have read her other Goblin stories, you will also want to read this one. If you haven’t gone to her web site, http://www.shonahusk.com/, stop over and check out her bookshelf which will show you what the other books in the series are.
