Otherworlds Summons is a series that has its own universe, and it contains seven worlds: Akai (the human world), Esai (vampire/zombies world), Hesa (elves, ogres, trolls), Mira (angels, demons), Piatra (gargoyles), Panu (also called Outerworld, vast nothingness), and Sahai (mages, wizards, sorcerers). You can think of them as parallel worlds or dimensions, where each of the creatures mentioned are the ‘normals’ and they each have their own types of ‘out of the norm’ beings. Scared yet? Hehe.
Gargoyle Addiction is set in Akai, our present day world basically, and Piatra. Kann Varis’s world, Piatra, is quite different from what he sees when he’s summoned into Akai, or as he affectionately calls it–the sleeper world.
Piatra is a mostly barren world, with little vegetation and though it has the equivalent of animals, there’s not a lot of that either. Gargoyles are raw meat eaters, they hunt live prey and devour it. They have to be very good hunters or they’ll starve. The landscape of Piatra looks pretty different from what we know, the sunlight is gray rather than the golden we’re used to, air is harder to breathe–the atmosphere is thicker. The Haus Varis residence, for instance, is a castle that’s surrounded by a cloud of poisonous gas–it shines in all the colors of the rainbow.
A lot of what we deem beautiful, or pretty, or sweet even, is pretty much the other way around in Piatra. It’s a cruel, vicious world populated by creatures adapted to that kind of life. Gargoyles don’t function on love and understanding, but fear and power. There are five types of gargoyles in this world, and they each live in a clan with its own residence. Each Haus or gargoyle clan has its own hunting grounds, but they hold a yearly fight, the Festnaval, to establish which Haus can hunt on another’s territories as well as on its own. Survival of the fittest taken to another level, pretty much.
If I’d have to sum up Piatra, I’d say it’s a cold and scary world. It’s pretty much the opposite of what we know, a place where what makes us human beings is worthless and may get you killed. While I wrote Gargoyle Addiction, I thought about what it means to be human, aside being born into the species. And then I built a world that’s radically different and pictured what it would be like to live there for a while. Scary, that was my conclusion.
How would you find a world like Piatra? Would you want to try it out? 🙂
Summonari don’t trust. Under their command, they summon any number of creatures from the Otherwolds—but never trust them outside of the summoning.
Gargoyles don’t love. Fierce descendants of dragons, they function on power and fear—never love.
Karla isn’t the happily-ever-after type of girl. No territory-hungry guy is going to stick flags all over her unclaimed grounds.
Kann’s world is death and betrayal. As Dar Primus of Haus Varis, he’s expected to follow tradition but he’s not your regular gargoyle. In fact, he’s anything but.
One fateful Friday night, Otherworlds collide. Stuck together in one world or another, Karla and Kann face everything from Awakenings and turbulent love to Festnavals and bloodthirsty scorned suitors.
If there’s one thing they can’t escape, it’s the addiction to each other. And they’ve got it bad.
